Dit onderzoek legt verbindingen tussen de (neo-)klassieke economie, de economisch-geografische invalshoek en de zogenaamde endogene-groeitheorie, waarbij technologie en human capital een stuwende werking op economische groei hebben. Combinaties van deze drie zienswijzen kunnen mogelijk betere modellen en verklaringen geven van economische groei en van innovativiteit.
Gedetailleerd schaalniveau
Uit de economische en economisch-geografische theorie is veel bekend over de ruimtelijke clustering van innovatie, de lokale groei van kennis, en de rol van de overheid daarin. Economisch-geografische theorie legt daarbij meer nadruk op factoren als industriële structuur, clusters en technologisch leiderschap. Bovendien staan schaalvoordelen weer volop in de aandacht. Binnen dit project wordt onder andere empirisch onderzoek uitgevoerd. Daarbij gaat het vooral om onderzoek op een gedetailleerd regionaal schaalniveau: niet alleen de stad als agglomeratie, maar ook onderzoek binnen een stad, waar innovativiteit niet egaal gespreid is over de verschillende sectoren en de verschillende stadsdelen. De situatie in Nederland, en dan in het bijzonder Amsterdam, heeft extra aandacht binnen dit onderzoek, maar de discussie over de (stedelijke) knowledge economy wordt in hoge mate internationaal gevoerd.
